The Swing Bridge that crosses the Tyne between Newcastle and Gateshead was opened in 1876, and was designed and financed by William Armstrong. It is one of seven bridges that cross the Tyne, and alongside the Gateshead Millennium Bridge one of two that open to let ships through.
